THE IMPORTANCE OF PERIODIC EXAMINATIONS IN DOGS AND PRODUCTS
Genetic diseases in purebred dogs can cause manyhassles for both owners and breeders. Dogs of any breed may have genetic diseases and most vary with race, but in generalwe can mention hip dysplasia, cataracts, heart disease, among others. The big challenge in the control of these diseases, is that they can appear later in lifewhen the dog has been used for breeding. Fortunately there are now DNA testing for some diseases available in the U.S. and Europe, enabling the detection of the gene that causes the disease in animals of any age. Moreover, in these countries, dogs bred by reputable and conscious breeders are submitted annually to exams made by veterinarians specialists. Dogs who have any suspicion of genetic disease should be excluded from reproduction.
In Brazil, unfortunately, many of veterinary specialties (i.e. ophthalmology, orthopedics and cardiology) are not yet recognized by CFMV (Federal Council of Veterinary Medicine). However, there are many veterinarians specialized (non-experts) in several areas , with technical conditions to examine and diagnose genetic diseases in dogs, even without the certification of a specialist.
We still do not have an official certification of eye and orthopedic examination unified for the whole country, as occurs in the United States (CERF and OFA), which would be ideal. But the creation of official certificates in this Country is already under discussion and should be implemented in the upcoming years.
However, that is no reason for Brazilian breeders not to submit their breeding stock to periodic examination, with qualified and skilled veterinarians. The examination should be annual, as some diseases such as cataract and heart disease, are not present at birth and may develop later in life.
It is up to the breeders to do everything possible to prevent the emergence and development of these diseases in their bloodlines, through controlled, responsible breeding.
Potential buyers should searchthe chosen breed, learn about its most frequent genetic diseases and temperament problems and also investigate for reputable and responsible breeders.
We at Salatino do not breed dogs without first doing eye exams, heart and patella (common diseases in small breeds).
Before buying a puppy, make sure the chosen kennel has the negative disease reports from its parents AND beware of irresponsible breeders, because what is supposed to be a joy in your life can cause grief, pain and trouble amongst your family and great distress to your puppy.
